Experience Malaysia: Cameron Highlands

Cameron Highlands is a great hideaway from the hustle and bustle of the city. First developed by the British in the early 1920s, it is home to the famous 'BOH' tea plantation; Cameron Highlands is situated at the northwest of Pahang.

How to go: Various coach companies offer services to Cameron highlands from Golden Mile Complex. One of them is Konsortium. Tickets can be booked easily online and cost S$60-70 one way. Alternatively, Five star tours offer return coach tickets that cost S$80-110 depending on your period of travel.
Within Cameron highlands, the only way to get around is via hailing a cab or self-drive.

Review: The highlands got it’s name from a British surveyor, William Cameron, in the early 1880s. The highlands is surrounded by winding roads, lush greenery, and beautiful scenery.

While in Cameron Highlands, you should visit the Time Tunnel Museum, the first memorabilia museum in Malaysia. It was opened by See Kok Shan, an avid collector of knick-knacks and memorabilia.

There are two exhibition levels in Time Tunnel: up a short flight of steps, you can find a narrow ledge with exhibits on the floor, on tables, and also on shelves at eye-level.

Also take time to visit the BOH Tea Plantation founded in 1929 by J.A. Russel, a British businessman during the British colonial era in Malaya. Boh Tea Plantation has a total of 8,000 acres planted with tea, and prides itself to be the largest tea plantation in Southeast Asia.

The view of green rolling hills with the neat regular rows of tea plants is your reward for braving the narrow roads up to reach the plantation. When you reach the top, be sure to purchase a cup of tea and perhaps a slice of cake, and relax and enjoy the view for the rest of the afternoon.

While you are there, stay in Ye Old Smokehouse, a colonial-style bed and breakfast.

It’s laid-back atmosphere, English colonial-style deco and award-winning gardens will charm you. Spend an afternoon exploring the gardens in the smokehouse – they are award-winning and highly popular amongst locals for wedding shoots!

Take some time to relax and unwind on the swings in the front yard and bask in the warm sunshine and cool air.

You should also visit the Rose valley, which houses an impressive 450 varieties of roses, as well as other types of flowers and shrubs.
