How to go: Located southwest of Johor Bahru, in the district of Pontian, Johor, in Malaysia, Kukup just about two hours drive from Singapore, making it a convenient self-drive weekend getaway from singapore.
Accommodation: there are various chalets for rent in Kukup, catering to numbers ranging from a family of 3 to a large group of 10 or more. A wide variety of packages depending on if you require full board or prefer self-catering are available for selection. Our party of 10 rented a chalet for 1 night and paid $80-90 per person for full board and a return pickup service from SG-Kukup.
Famed for its open-air seafood restaurants built on stilts over the water, many Singaporeans like to take advantage of long weekends or public holidays to steal away to this quaint little village.
Over a weekend late last year, a couple of friends and I took the chance to take a break at this sleepy, laid-back place. Upon arrival, we were greeted warmly by our host, a friendly middle-aged lady who was a relative of a friend of our friend. She took us to our chalet which was a short five-minute walk away from the main stretch.

As it was raining, we took shelter in the chalet for the afternoon while having our lunch. By evening, the rain had subsided and we decided to go out for a stroll to take photos. We walked from our chalet to the edge of the chalet stretch and found a small platform area where people were lighting up fireworks and taking photos. As evening fell, we spent the night taking photos and chatting with each other.

The rustic charm of Kukup delighted us — the friendly locals; cheap and delicious seafood, adorable stray dogs and cats that roamed it’s streets; these were the things we loved and miss about it. Our time spent together in Kukup remains a fond memory in all of our hearts.
